SYDNEY ZOMBIE LURCH 2008 - THIS SUNDAY

Posted on October 2008

The Australian Centre for Zombie Studies has noted a sharp upswing in
the Sydney Zombie population at the end of every October. 2008 does
not look to be any different…

October 2008 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the release of George
Romero’s classic 1968 film ‘Night of the Living Dead’, the first film
to popularise the Zombie genre among English-speaking Western
audiences.

This groundbreaking film was also one of the first to feature an
African-American lead star in Duane Jones, and has been registered in
the US Library of Congress as a film deemed “historically, culturally
or aesthetically important”. It also led to a slew of sequels and
imitators and single-handedly created a new genre of Western horror
films.

As part of the global World Zombie Day celebrations, the Zombies of
Sydney are coming out to play in the CBD on 26/10/2008. Coalescing at
the Archibald fountain at 3pm, over a hundred zombies are preparing to
‘Lurch’ to Wynyard Park with hunger in their sights.

The aim of World Zombie Day is to highlight the plight of the hungry,
and each of the Zombies is expected to bring an item of non-perishable
food to be donated to a local charity.

Fast becoming a regular annual event worldwide, Sydney’s Zombie Lurch
attracts the undead from all over the state who are proud to stand up
for the hungry and an afternoon of ghoulish fun. As one of over forty
cities worldwide participating in World Zombie Day, Sydney is proud to
boast one of the biggest turnouts of the restless dead on Earth.

Members of the media are invited to attend to document this remarkable
phenomenon and raise awareness of the efforts of the World Zombie Day
organisation to highlight the cause of world hunger.

SYDNEY ZOMBIE LURCH 2008

Posted on October 2008

Location: Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park, Sydney

Date: 26/10/2008.

Route: revised zombie route2.jpg

What you need:
-Your best zombie rig!

-Water. It’s going to be a warm day and we don’t want anyone having hydration issues.

-Sunscreen. Protect your skin, rotten as it is.

-Canned/nonperishable food for donation. I will be trying to arrange a visit from a charity organisation to pick up the donations at 3pm.

-Any medications you may need (zombies on ventolin…)

-ID, some spending money and a sense of humour.

-Extras. If you can bring makeup, maquillage, fake blood/body parts, old clothes or anything else that might help others ‘zombie up’ it would be great if you could bring them.

What we need:
-Meatwagon. If anyone has a van, we could use it as we may need to store personal items and/or have a temporary space for getting ‘zombied up’. If you have a van and are happy to place it at our disposal please send me a message to let me know.

-First aiders. Please let me know by Facebook message if you have a current first aid certificate, a basic medical kit and are willing to assist in the event of a minor medical incident.

-Photographer/s. We will need one or more people with a good-quality still and/or video camera to be the official photographers. Good photos of the event may be considered for the ‘Brains for Breakfast’ coffee table book being put together by Gary Kemble. Please message myself and Gary if you are willing to help out in this regard.

- If anyone else would like to help as a ‘zombie wrangler’ (”stay away, please, they may bite”) point of contact, Lurch Marshal or hapless victim, please message me to let me know.

Special Notes!

Don’t pour blood over your head! It gets everywhere and the council wasn’t pleased with it at the last one.

Don’t touch anyone elses camera! It might seem like a great photo idea for you to get up close to the lense but you can damage somebody’s camera and it actually makes a worse shot because you’re too close.

Don’t go into shops. Just don’t, okay?

Don’t use actual animal blood. It’s all a bit unhygienic.
